The God of the Promise
Ken Edge preaches Genesis 22:1-14, God's call for Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, looking at the story through three sets of eyes. Through Abraham's eyes, after 25 years of waiting for the promised son, God asks him to give up the promise itself, and Abraham rises early and obeys because he trusts that God is able even to raise the dead (Hebrews 11:17-19). We learn that the God of the promise is better than the promises, and that nothing we hold was ever ours to begin with (1 Corinthians 4:7). Through Isaac's eyes, we are all headed up the mountain to pay for our sin, asking 'Where is the lamb?', and God answers, 'I myself will provide the lamb,' fulfilled when John the Baptist says, 'Behold, the Lamb of God.' Through the Lamb's eyes, we see that God did what he spared Abraham from doing: he gave his only Son, and there was no ram waiting for Jesus, because he was the Lamb. So we can trust God with the deepest part of our souls.
