Jesus as the True Vine
Joshua Fleming examines Jesus' seventh "I am" statement in the Gospel of John, presenting the metaphor of Jesus as the true vine. He identifies five subjects within the passage: four related to an agricultural metaphor involving the vine, vinedresser, branches, and fruit-bearing, and one additional element. Fleming notes that the vine imagery would have been familiar to the Jewish audience, referencing Old Testament passages where Israel was identified as God's vine, including Psalm 80:8-19, Isaiah 5:7, Ezekiel 19:10-14, and Hosea 10. He argues that while Israel was hand-chosen and ordained by God with every advantage to succeed spiritually, it produced wild grapes instead of righteousness and justice.
